US charges British Virgin Islands prime minister and two others with drug trafficking, money laundering – JURIST

On Friday, federal prosecutors in Miami charged British Virgin Islands (BVI) Prime Minister Andrew Alturo Fahie and two others charged with drug trafficking and money laundering, US Department of Justice (DOJ) mentioned.

fahie, BVI Ports Authority chief executive Oleanvine Maynard and his son Kadeem Maynard have been charged with cocaine trafficking and money laundering conspiracies for agreeing to facilitate the safe passage through BVI ports of tons of Colombian cocaine bound for Miami.

According to prosecutors, the defendants met with an alleged drug trafficker to negotiate the deal during March and April. They conspired to obtain the required licenses, protect cocaine-filled boats in BVI ports, bribe some government officials and bring in 3,000 kilograms once or twice a month for four months. Fahie and Oleanvine Maynard would get a percentage of the sales amounting to millions of dollars which would be funneled through different businesses and bank accounts.

Documents and affidavits filed in court suggest that an undercover American informant posing as a Sinaloa Cartel trafficker met with the three defendants and lured them into the deal to protect alleged cocaine shipments entering Miami through the BVI ports in Tortola. The shipment from Colombia would pass through Tortola and Puerto Rico en route to Miami and New York. The plan would have been for the cash advance payment to be left on a private jet at the Miami-Opa Locka Airport and picked up by Oleanvine Maynard at the BVI. Additionally, as part of the deal, Fahie would receive funding for his re-election campaign and Kadeem Maynard would receive 60 kilograms of cocaine to sell per week.

Fahie and Oleanvine Maynard were arrested Thursday while in Miami for allegedly taking a $700,000 advance toward the deal. Kadeem Maynard was arrested in St. Thomas. Following Fahie’s arrest, the BVI Commission of Inquiry released a report citing gross maladministration to prevent corruption and drug-related crimes and suggesting that the BVI should temporarily suspend its constitution, dissolve its house of assembly and be directly governed by its governor.
