Organic food is not healthier for you or for animals and nature – just much more expensive

In the modern world, we are often encouraged to eat organic. It is more nutritious, without pesticides and protects animals and the environment. We have all been told such things over and over again and sometimes I felt like it was something we were selling.

Well it looks like I wasn’t really wrong. Thanks to very effective marketing, a lot of people think this is true. According to a Cornell University experiment, most people, if given a choice between organic or regular foods, will choose organic foods, believing it to be nutritious and healthy.

And millennials will also have a feel-good factor and pay more for the organic choice as well. But, the reality of these beliefs about organic food is far from the reality.

In 2012, the Stanford University Center for Health Policy made a comprehensive comparison between organic and regular foods and concluded that organic foods are not nutritionally superior to all conventional alternatives. And a recent review of 20 years of research on animal products by some Italian researchers confirms these results. The authors concluded that “scientific studies do not show that organic products are more nutritious and safer than conventional foods”.

It’s opened the eyes of a lot of people, but like Bjorn Lomborg, president of the Copenhagen Consensus Center explains that many awakened millennials would say they prefer organic too because they care about the treatment of farm animals and the environment. ‘environment. But that’s not entirely true either, and the facts tell us otherwise.

Animals on organic farms are generally not healthier than animals on regular farms. A 5-year American study of dairy farms by Oregon State University showed that animal health outcomes on organic farms are similar to those at conventional dairies.

The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety also reached similar conclusions. While pigs and other poultry animals may benefit from greater freedom in the open spaces of organic farms, this “freedom” also increases exposure to parasites, pathogens and predators.

Regarding the environment, it is true that in organic farming a farmer would use less energy and create less greenhouse gases, but by giving up fertilizers and pesticides, organic farming is much less efficient. than ordinary agriculture. Which means that organic farming needs a lot more land than regular farming to produce the same amount of profitable crops. Something that is causing great stress to Indian farmers who are already facing land scarcity.

For example, one study found that to produce the same amount of organic milk, it would take 59% more land, and for crops, almost 200% of the land would be needed. So more land for agriculture means less land for nature.

Economically, it also means that organic food needs more land, labor and capital. Although many argue that organic farming does not mean pesticides. However, that is not entirely true either. Organic farming uses natural pesticides like copper sulfate and pyrethrin which has led to a 3-fold increase in leukemia in farmers, while Cooper’s sulfate has also caused liver disease in Vineyard sprayers in France.

So, if we go through logic and a little brain, organic food is neither healthier for us nor better for animals and the environment, nor conventional alternatives.

So, why the craze and popularity of organic?

Short answer, the power of marketing. Organic food is a first world luxury, and technically its purchase is just as valid as any other luxury purchase. So, people should resist any implied moral superiority while buying organic food. Left elites living in the world’s first country and others often fail to understand this and often inhumanely involve in forums, debates and opinion pieces that those who cannot buy organic food should ” to eat less”. Most notably, millionaire and ultra-leftist fashion designer Vivienne Westwood.

Unfortunately, a lot of people in developing countries don’t have the option to eat less, they worry about eating at all. And for that, they must have access to cheaper food and for that more access to cheaper fertilizers and pesticides.

People shouldn’t get carried away with smart marketing, and shouldn’t let the mainstream establishment, including the government minister, businesses and activists, insult their wits and intellect. It doesn’t take much to find the facts, but these revived campaigns and activism continue to advance their narrative. With people following blindly.

People really shouldn’t let their integrity and intellect be manipulated by them. And it should start with people like us, which is Gen Z people.
